A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the country's president.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition urged an urgent halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in total adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and running of these national projects.
