Congress Approves Bill to Release Jeffrey Epstein Files

The Senate on Tuesday gave swift approval to a bill that will mandate the disclosure of case documents associated with the deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, following a near-unanimous vote in the US House of Representatives and a change of position by the president and his Republican allies. Trump's team relented after an extended period of trying to forestall the bipartisan effort involving a case that has dogged the president since his return to the White House.

Unanimous Passage in Congress

Senators proceeded by general agreement, which requires approval from each senator but avoids a individual voting process, expediting the process. Just before, the House passed by a huge margin the bill on a massive majority.

Citizens have been patient long enough. Those affected have suffered long enough,” the Senate Democratic leader declared in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before requesting the Senate to approve it without opposition. “Uncover the facts. Allow openness to prevail.”

Next Steps

The bill next heads to Trump for his approval. He stated on the previous day that he would endorse the legislation.

Although the president has for an extended period rejected the uproar over the authorities' approach of the Epstein case as a “Democrat hoax”, he signalled his support for the legislation over the weekend, and stated he would approve it if it reaches his desk.

Response

Opposition lawmakers, along with those affected and their representatives who were seated in a House gallery, cheered after the bill was passed. Lone dissent came from a Louisiana Republican, who expressed concern he feared the measure would make public identifying details of people, those under scrutiny and others caught up in the investigation.
