In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the New Political Agreement
According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Discussions Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
