Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's first goal, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to ensure the London club went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's team into third place in the Premier League, five points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils duties at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only attempts on goal, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free the defender to head home.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's absence - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defence, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair handled excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of recognised strikers - had scored just a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having space and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, was unable to influence the game after replacing the starter in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.
