Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
